Want Former System On Fertiliser Bags

A decision to request the Government to revert to the former system whereby the cost of fertiliser bags was included in the ex-work price of fertiliser was reached by the Northland Dairy Association at its annual conference in Whangarei today. The chairman (Mr. E. G. Appleton) stated in his report that an arrangement had recently been introduced whereby an extra charge for bags was imposed on the farmer, the charge being partly refunded on return. However, it frequently happened that the bags, on return, and through no fault of the farmer, were unusable, and the refund was consequently lost.

This arrangement had caused considerable dissatisfaction, and resulted in a resolution being passed by the Dairy Industry Council and forwarded to the Minister for Agriculture. The resolution had supported the proposal to revert to the previous arrangement whereby the cost of bags was included in the ex-works price of fertiliser. Further Request

The Minister, in reply, had admitted that the new arrangement had not been satisfactory, and had promised an announcement on the matter after he had had the opportunity of considering the best arrangement which could be made. Although this reply had been dated April 3, no announcement had yet appeared. Mr. A. B. Cox, of Maungaturoto, suggested that there was need for the industry to press the Government again on the question, the position now being most unsatisfactory. His motion, seconded by Mr. E. S. Tremaine, of Whangarei. and supported by Mr. F. Elliott, of Hikurangi, that the Government should be requested to revert to the former system, was approved.
