Aircraft Carrier.—The Berlin news agency claims that the British aircraft carrier Argus, visibly damaged, has left the eastern Mediterranean for Gibraltar, accompanied by destroyers. Solomon’s Caves.—A message from Jerusalem says that the caves which King Solomon built have been placed at the disposal of the A.R.P. authorities. They could shelter 6000 people. Argentine.—The acting President of the Argentine (Signor Castillo) has issued a decree prohibiting belligerent submarines from using Argentine ports and territorial waters, except in cases of emergency. U-Boat Ace Trumped.—A Berlin communique states that a U-boat under the command of the famous Kapitan-Lieutnant Guenther Prien has not returned from its last cruise and its loss can be presumed. The commander torpedoed the British battleship Royal Oak in the early part of the war.
Turkish Quakes. —The Ankara radio says heavy earthquake shocks were experienced last night in 11 towns in the west of Turkey, including Smyrna. There were some casualties at Milas, where the population spent the night in the streets and public gardens.
