Australian Reinforcement Arrives
LONDON, May 25
Reporls that Australian troops, with tanks have landed in Crete., and have already joined in the battle against the invaders, are sent to the “New York Herald-Tribune” by its Cairo correspondent. These have instilled confidence, so firm is the American belief now in the fighting qualities of the Anzacs. Revealing the Australians’ arrival at Crete, the British spokesman said that the Australians sent back a message paying a tribute to the Greeks and Cretans battling at Their side. Most Severe Battle Yet The Berlin correspondent of the Swiss newspaper “Neue Zuercher Zeitung” says: “While the German public is still uninformed of the battle of ■Crete, the military authorities describe it as comparable only with the battles of the last war. “They say that it far exceeds any battle of the present war in the severity of the fighting. Greece and Yugoslavia are mere episodes compared with the resistance offered in Crete.”
American newspaper correspondents in London and Cairo are commenting in a slightly more optimistic tone on the situation, but they still emphasise that it is too soon to become completely optimistic.
