Personal Pars
Mr. H. H. Horner, headmaster of the Whangarei Primary School, is on a month’s sick leave. The acting headmaster is Mr. A. O. Steventon. Lieutenant G. W. Foote, formerly in charge of the secondary department of the Ruawai District High School has taken up an appointment at the Army Area Office at Whangarei. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, a member of the New Zealand War Cabinet, and the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister for Lands, have arrived in Washington. An earlier message announced their arrival in Los Angeles, and stated that they were to leave for Washington immediately. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Frederick William Platts, C.M.G., aged 76, district coroner, of Hamilton. Mr Platts was in 1915 resident commissioner of Rarotonga and chief judge of the High Court, Cook Islands. He retired in 1934 and became district c&roner.
Cables reporting all well have been received from several local men serving overseas. Their many friends in Northland will be pleased to learn that the following have advised their next-of-kin that they are safe and in good health: Captain C. M. Torbet (Matakohe)', Gunner Cyril Jenkins ("Matakohe), Sergeant W.j Sutherland (Paparoa), Corporal Joe] Angell, of the Maori Battalion, and Privates Alfred R. and C. D. Lorimer and Jack Purchase (all of Portland), and Frank Ching (Whangarei).
