Home Guardsmen Resume Parades
First parades of Whangarei Home Guard companies since the cancellation owing to the outbreak of meningitis were held yesterday. A Company paraded at the Whangarei School and spent the morning practising grenade throwing and in rifle drill.
C Company is proving most enthusiastic and has decided to hold parades every Wednesday evening at the High School and every Sunday morning in an effort to get down to solid work and carry out an extensive syllabus. One Sunday each month will be a full-day parade.
Yesterday morning members of C Company had their first practice shoot. Tested for aiming, range-setting and trigger-pressing, all passed and took part in their first grouping shoot. Conducted at the High School range, the shoot showed a high standard of marksmanship and members had cause to be pleased with their achievements. All companies will resume the regular week-night parades next Wednesday evening. Efficiency Shield To instil even more keenness and enthusiasm among members, platoons of B Company are to compete for a shield which will be awarded monthly. Commencing next month, points will be awarded to each platoon for general efficiency, including drill, smartness on parade and attendance, and the platoon with the best total at the end of the period will hold the shield for the next month. Made by a member of the company, Mr. D. Stokes, the shield has been mounted with plaques donated by Mr. E. H. Palmer, on which the winning platoon’s number will be c-ngraved each month.
