Times Call For Self-Examination

-NEWALL [Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Ncwall), and Lady Newall, attended an Empire Day reception organised by the Auckland branch of the Royal Empire Society on Saturday night. The President (Mr. Justice Fair), fead an Empire Day message from Lord Bledisloe, and one of greetings and good wishes from the chairman of the council of the Royal Empire Society in London (Sir Frederick Sykes). ‘'The Empire, far from being destroyed,” wrote Sir Frederick, “is being recreated. There has been nothing more inspiring in the history of the world than the unity of purpose and of action of the British Commonwealth of nations, from the great Dominions to the smallest Crown Colony.” Personal Contribution The necessity for everyone to do his part in the great struggle was emphasised by the Governor-General in his reply to a speech of welcome. They must direct their thoughts and actions to the very grave perils that menaced them.

It was the duty of every British man and woman to examine themselves thoroughly and ask whether they were doing everything within their power to further the Empire’s cause. The greater the privilege the heavier the responsibility that went with it, and citizenship in the British Empire was the great privilege of all. In the titanic struggle in which the Empire was engaged there was a part for every individual man and woman, and they could all look for inspiration to the courage and devotion of those brave lads who were giving their lives for them.

Ideal Of Service j “Nowhere in history,” said Sir Cyril, j “can be found a better example of the j highest ideal of service than that be-1 ing given every day and every minute of the day by our King and Queen, j • “Never has a leadership been, more inspiring than that given by Mr. Win-! ston Churchill. Let each one of us be i worthy of our leaders by putting every- J thing, we possess into the struggle.” !

One Tree Point Domain For several days past the One Tree Point Domain has been a hive of industry, where the much-needed and looked-forward to social room is rapidly taking shape. Residents are cooperating wholeheartedly in the work, and it is expected that the building will be an established fact within this week. With its completion, a long-felt necessity will be provided. In the very near future, social evenings will be organised, probably on a weekly basis, and there is no doubt that this new district' amenity will be made full use of.
