Famous French Soldier Leaves Syria To Join Gen. de Gualle
Goes To Palestine With His Troops
[British Official Wireless] (Received 2.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 23. THE FAMOUS FRENCH MILITARY LEADER, COLONEL 1 COLLET, HAS LEFT SYRIA TO JOIN THE FREE FRENCH FORCES. In a manifesto addressed to officers and soldiers of the Army of the Levant, Colonel Collet recalls General Dentz’s “solemn promise” to defend Syria, and states that the French army was convinced he would keep his word. Colonel Collet states that French supplies were given the Bagdad rebels for the war against Britain. Citing Marshal Petain’s statement of April 17 that “honour forbids us to take any action against our former Allies,” Colonel Collet asked: “Can it be that you have forgotten so easily or attach so little importance to honour?” Entirely reflecting Vichy excuses, German planes made “forced landings” in Syria, said Colonel Collet. The Vichy policy was incompatible with honour, and he crossed the frontier into Palestine with his troops, as he could no longer _ remain at his post without becoming an accomplice in this policy.
