Arrested. —M. Andre Blumel, who was private secretary to M. Leon Blum, has been arrested while attempting to cross the French frontier into Spain. Spain.—The Spanish Foreign Minister (Senor Suner) has been made “Dictator of the Falange,” under an order signed by General Franco. It virtually gives Senor Suner, as General Franco’s second in command, complete control of party appointments. Spirits.—From June 3 the price of whiskey in Britain will be 17/6 a bottle, and of gin 17/- a bottle. Sunk.—The Canadian tanker Canadolite (11,309 tons) owned by the Impend Oil Shipping Company has been sunk. Forty of the officers and members of the crew have been interned by the enemy. U.S. Bonds.—The United States Secretary for the Treasury (Mr. Henry Morgenthau) announced that the first 17 days’ sale of the new Defence Savings Bonds produced 257,646,000 dollars.
