Warrior: War Horse And Hunter Dies, Aged 30

Lord Mottistone’s famous war horse, Warrior, which escaped unscathed from many battles of the last war and lived to hear the roar of German planes over his country stable in the Isle of Wight, has died at the age of 30.

His health had broken down and Lord Mottistone decided to have him destroyed.

Outside the horse’s stable was a board recording Warrior’s war service. He carried his master, then General J. E. B. Seely, through four years of fighting, including the attack on the forest of Moreuil in March, 1918, when 800 horses were killed in less than an hour. Lord Mottistone once said of his horse: “Warrior’s escapes were wonderful. Again and again he survived when death seemed certain. He became contemptuous of shell fire, but rifle and machine-gun fire always worried him.”

After the war Warrior won many point-to-point races.
