Start Made On Light Reduction In Whangarei
The restricted lighting regulations were advertised last night and in seme areas a start was made in reducing the power of street lighting. However, it is expected that it will take a week to cut down the street lights in ways recommended by the local reduced lighting committee. The chairman of the committee (Mr W. J. Dawson) said today that the committee was being reasonable in its demands. In the case of advertising signs, these were not being dealt with until the street lights in their particular area also received attention. “It would be little use blacking out the advertising signs and leaving the street lights at normal,” said Mr Dawson. Private Dwellings Unaffected . Asked how the regulations affected private dwellings. Mr Dawson said they were not at present affected. Even household's that did not have blinds to their windows did not need to worry at the moment. When the main scheme of reducing sky glow had been put into operation a survey of the effectiveness of the steps would be taken and then, if necessary, further measures could be enforced.
