Chambers (Sumner) 23—13, but later put up corresponding figures, 32—8, against J. Holgate (Mornington). j The hard-fighting Dunedin skip, T. | Ferguson (Balmacewan), made things I hard for his opponents. In the mornj ing he beat W. J. Caldwell (Maheno) I 26 —17, and later put down T. H. Watts (Beckenham) 33 —14. A. Beslcy (Sydenham), one of the hardest-driving skips in Christchurch, scored twice. He beat Watts (Beckenham) 25—24, and Caldwell (Maheno) 28—11. Octogenarian in Form. C. Taylor (Sydnenham), who has just celebrated his 80th birthday and who was well up in post-section games of the singles, started off well by beating J. Du Feu (St. Albans) 26—21, and S. In the first game he beat A. W. Cullen (Thorndon) 33—10, and in the second G. Williams (Edgeware) 32—14. Turpin was second in R. Haworth’s team that won the fours championship in 1936 and he led for the same skip when they won the pairs the same year. Brothers Lose, Win. P. The four Martin brothers, skipped by J. S. Martin (Carlton), but who have entered from the United Club, went down 21—20 to P. W. Smith (Thorndon), but scored a 28—18 win over J. B. Hawkey (Timaru). A game watched with interest was that between R. Haworth (Canterbury) and J. D. Marks (Christchurch). Eight Points Useless. It proved no contest, however, as the former ran out an easy winner, 29—11, this being Haworth's second win for the day. K. Morrison (Dunedin) .got two wins, beating E. C. Scales (Ashbury) 26—22, and R. Burgess (Woolston) 26—18. R. E. McNish (Canterbury), another of the early choices to be among the finalists, scored two wins. Against T. G. Fox (Christchurch) he won 29—12, and put down M. J. Cary (Thorndon), 27—18. The first eight points scored were obtained by W. J. Crawford (Otago), playing against L. Goldfinch (Wellington), but in spite of this handicap the Wellington skip tied on the last head and eventually won the game. Today’s Play.

Play in the fours was continued today on greens that were again heavy after overnight rain. While it is still too early to see the course of the final stages of sectional play, several rinks by their steady play seem certain to go on to postsectional games. Among these are four Canterbury rinks, skipped respectively by J. W. Turpin, R. Haworth, P. Munn and R. E. McNish. W. Carswell (Taieri). H. S. Maslin (Hawera), E. R. Moss (Greymouthr and T. Ferguson (Balmacewen) are others with excellent prospects.
