German Policy Aimed As Blow At Our Heart

-l. S. AMERY RUGBY, November 13. The Secretary of State for India (Mr L. S. Amery), in a speech, described German policy over the past year as “a military design aimed as a blow at our heart.” Poland was destroyed to clear Hitler’s rear, and the conquest of the Low Countries and France represented successive steps to bring Britain within range of fighter aircraft so that an overwhelming blow might be delivered at British production after destroying the Royal Air Force. “The courage of a few thousand

He described the battle which the Royal Air Force had won as one which in this war would figure as the battle of the Marne did in the last.

Although invasion, might be tried, Mr Amery continued, it now had a very much slighter chance of success. The first design against Britain having failed, what Mr Amery described as “the second great design” was now being staged. For success much depended on who could be called, bribed or bullied into taking part with the Axis powers.

Axis’ New Plan

Extending from Gibraltar to Singapore, from Morocco to Indo-China, the main plan constituted a terrible menace which must not be underestimated.

Although the first move—the Nazification of Rumania—had succeeded, the Italian effort against Greece “was becoming somewhat agitated.” Mussolini, while posing as a Roman warrior restoring the glories of ancient Rome, forgot that the Roman Empire had grown by character and that her distinguishing feature was law, not lawlessness.

He had also forgotten that before there was an ancient Roman Empire, there was an ancient Greece, the spirit of which still lived.
