Death Sentence On Cartman Commuted

The Executive Council met today, the Governor-General Lord Galway) presiding, when the death sentence passed on Douglas Herbert Cartman was considered.

The Executive Council's decision was that the death sentence be commuted to imprisonment for life. Cartman was convicted eight weeks ago of murder at Waikino. It is understood that reports indicate that the prisoner is of less than normal mentality, though he could not be regarded as insane.
