Transylvania Deathroll Only Between 30 And 40

LONDON. August 15. The armed merchant cruiser Transylvania (10,923 tons), which was torpedoed at night, sank in a rough sea. Rescuing ships, including trawlers, raced to the scene and saved 300 of the officers and crew, who were landed at a West Coast port. The deathroll is thought to be between 30 and 40. Immediately it was realised the ship was doomed, the captain ordered the lowering of the lifeboats. One of them overturned, this probably accounting for most of the casualties. The captain was among those saved. The Transylvania was the sixth British armed merchant cruiser lost during the war.
