Compulsory War Service In India
(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. The India Office announced that 10,000 additional men will be employed in munition works throughout India under a compulsory national service ordinance affecting skilled and semi-skilled workers. The ordinance, which is the first application of compulsory war service in India, empowers the Government to call up technicians not engaged in work of national importance. It has been well received everywhere. It is authoritatively stated that Britain is examining a plan to accumulate and store present surplus stocks of foodstuffs throughout the Empire against a time when they will be available to territories Germany is now occupying. The plan includes financing the purchase of surpluses.
