Mangonui

On June 21, the Mangonui school children held a bring-and-buy afternoon at the school for the sick and wounded fund. There was a large attendance and the sum of £ls , was raised. The proceedings were opened by the children singing “God Defend New Zealand.” and “There Will Always Be an England,” followed by a short speech by Mr R. T. Wrathall, in the unavoidable absence of the chairman of the school committee (Mr D. J. McKay). During the afternoon the children entertained the visitors with songs, recitations and poi dances. The cakes were won by Mesdames Hyland and C. Foster. The cord of wood by Mr Alf Cornes, and. the bag of flour by Miss Beryl Wrathall. On June 20, a dance was held in the Oruru hall, in aid of the sick and wounded fund, when over £7O was raised. Mr W. Thomas carried out the duties of M.C. The roast turkey was won by Mr F. Dobell and a hairpin set was won by Mrs L. Martin. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Miss P. Jacentho and Mr R. Garton. Personals Mrs McKenzie, of Herekino, is the guest of the Misses Houston. , Mrs Hyland, who has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs Settree for the past seven weeks, has left for her home in Auckland. Mr and Mrs A. Stewart paid a visit to Dargaville during the week-end. Mr Jack Houston, of Herekino, is visiting his home. Mr Simelhay has returned from a visit .to Auckland. Miss V. Bright, of Mangonui Hotel, is visiting Auckland. Mrs H. W. Cameron, of Hawera, was a visitor to Mangonui during last week. Mr George Berghan has returned from a short holiday.
