World’s Largest Bomber Takes Shape
Thi& photo diagram shows world’s largest airplane, Douglas B 19 longrange bomber, as it looked in its steel jig at Santa Monica plant of. Douglas Aircraft Co. recently. Black lines show size of centre section and wing, minus 12ft. of tips. It was built by 500 craftsmen and 100 engineers, 200 of whom are shown on jig’s seven working levels. This photo was taken from tail section, which will be joined to nose section behind jig in few weeks, after huge steel skeleton of supporting structure is cut away. Flight tests on the giant ship are scheduled for late this summer, most formidable skycraft in his- * tory, this new United States Army bomber weighs 160,0001 b fully loaded, has 6000 h.p. in four engines.
