Northern Farmers ’ Decision

FARMERS in the Hokianga and Bay of Islands counties performed a national service when they pledged themselves, at a meeting held at Kaikohe, to do everything within their power to increase primary production in the North in order to supplement the supply of foodstuffs for Britain and Allied countries. Many ways in which production might be increased were suggested, and, though there were differences of opinion as to efficacy of some methods discussed, there was absolute agreement upon the general principle that nothing should be left undone which would secure even a small increase in the output of the individual farm. It is cheering to hear that the northern farmers have adopted an attitude which cannot but stimulate increased production, for it is unquestionable that the farmer who tries to get the utmost out of his land or herds during a time of crisis may be regarded as a soldier on the home front, where, after all, a vitally important contribution must be made if the war is to be won. This is no time for recrimination or obstructive criticism. The enemy will not let up while any section of.industry in New Zealand engages in academic discussion. In common parlance, all who have at their hand the means of assisting their country by increasing output of the things required for the winning of the war must “get to it” without delay. It is indeed gratifying to note that northern farmers are awake to this need. The good lead given will doubtless be followed in other districts.
