Kauris Felled At Purua

C/o. R. A. Drake, Aponga, Pipiwai R.D. Dear Kupe,— I received the book last night, and thank you very much. I have read the story, “Emily’s Quest,’’ a very interesting book, and I am sure this one, “Emily Climbs,” will be equally as interesting, at least I think it will be more interesting, as the thought of the “Young Northlander” and its leader, will always linger with it. Well. Kupe. the 1 Purua district has now had the electricity switched on. and we held the switching-on dance in the hall iiast Wednesday night. There was quite a crowd there, and many old pioneers of Purua, as you have probably seen by the “Advocate." The hall had been beautifully decorated for the occasion, by the ladies of the district.

On the Thursday morning, after the dance, Mother, my brother and 1 left home at 8.50 a.m. and walked cross-country, to a bush, not far from the boundary fence of our farm, to see the felling of the biggest kauri tree in Purua. It was about seven feet in diameter, G 1 feet to the first limb, and about a 1.6-foot girth. The day before, a smaller one was cut down. The two trees were very close together There was only about a yard and a-half between them. The school teacher and all the uppei classes of the school children, were there also. We are ail quite well out here, although I had n cold last week, from which I have now quite recovered. The twins are growing very quickly We had them here on the 15th of May, for their great-grandmother's 77t’n birthday, and were looking after them last Tuesday night. Hoping the S.P.’s feet are not. as cold now as they were. I will say Cheerio for now. I am, A loyal maiden, LILIAN DRAKE, P.S. —It was estimated about 11,000 feet of timber weie in the larger of the two kauri trees.
