Springfield’s 3-0 Against Mata

Mata won the toss and decided to play with the sun at their back with a slight uphill grade against them when Springfield and Mata met bn Saturday. The play was fast from the start, going from end to end. Neither side played a goal-keeper. A nie’e movement from half-way by Springfield ended in T. Palmer netting. From the bully Mata carried the play into Springfield’s 25, but the defence was good and sent the ball to mid-field. Mata kept pressing and was soon back in Springfield’s 25, but was penalised for offside play. From the free hit Springfield got away on the left Wing and a nice centre was taken by J. Palmer, who netted. Mata again took play to Springfield’s 25 and tried hard* to score. The forwards were a little slow In taking advantage of the centres given and the Springfield defences cleared. After some midfield play, Springfield’s centre-half started a nice movement to the right wing which was Carried across to the left, where L. Whisker played a good shot to score,

after 30 minutes’ play, the third goal for Springfield. The half-time score was 3—o in Springfield’s favour. In the second half Mata was pressing again at the start, with Springfield defence very sure. After considerable midfield play, Mata carried the ball to Springfield and managed to get a penalty corner. The movement was spoiled by sticks in the circle. After the free hit Springfield carried the play to Mata’s half, but the ball was again sent to Springfield’s 25 and after a piece of good play in the circle Springfield cleared over the back line, resulting in a penalty corner for Mata. Mata kept the pressure up, but Springfield cleared and the game finally ended 3—o for Springfield, with no score in the second half.

The game was fast and clean throughout. Umpires were Messrs Campbell and Primmer.
