Thames Estuary Anti-Aircraft Guns Bark

LONDON, May 10. Anti-aircraft guns went into action early today at several points around the Thames Estuary. German aeroplanes, believed to be Heinkel bombers, were seen at a great height flying from west to east. The® intense anti-aircraft fire over the Thames Estuary began at 4.40 a.m. and lasted 20 minutes. After the sighting of five German aeroplanes, gunfire shook buildings. Shrapnel fell in the streets of riverside towns. The aeroplanes continued on a course eastward, apparently heading toward Chatham. There was also fierce anti-aircraft fire at Dover, where one enemy machine is believed to have been shot down. The bombers, it is thought,, were directing their operations against shipping.
