“Lift 40-Hour Week As War Measure”
PALMERSTON N., This Day. Abandonment by the Government of -he 40-hour week as a wartime measure would do more to increase production than all verbal appeals of Ministers. Mr D. G. Gordon (Taihape), president of the Wellington Central Executive of the Farmers’ Union, expressed this opinion at the annual meeting today. He said that in practically every other calling when increased effort was required the inducement of overtime rates of pay was offered, but not so to the farmer. If the Government wanted increased production the commonsense way was to offer extra payment.
