Kaikohe Chamber Of Commerce’s Annual Meeting
[Special to “Northern Advocate”! KAIKOHE, This Day. Steady but sure progress has been made by the Kaikohe Chamber ol Commerce in the past year. This point was clearly emphasised at the annual. meeting of the chamber this week when a large attendance of members discussed business relating to the progress and advancement ol' the town and district. The president (Mr H. F. Guy) mentioned the introduction of electricity to the district, and the inauguration of new State departments in the town. The balance sheet tabled by the treasurer (Mr V. F. Cracknell) revealed the chamber’s finances to be substantial, a fact which Mr W. C. Wylie stated was largely due to the enthusiasm and efforts of the president and secretary. Mr Guy was re-elected to the position of president, and Mr Cracknell was again re-elected to the position of secretary and treasurer. The executive Committee appointed comprised Messrs. L. W. Franks, H. Ingram and W. Thorpe. A special committee comprising Messrs. W. Stewart, J. Crawley and F. Macdermott, was set up to go into the social life of the chamber with a view to increasing its social activities. Veterinary Science. The establishment of a Chair of Veterinary Science in New Zealand was brought before the meeting by Mr A. H, Wright, who stated that at present farmers were faced with an acute shortage of skilled men. Veterinary surgeons, he said, were now unprocurable from England, and unless a chair was established at a New Zealand university, the position would become more serious.
It was decided that the chamber should send a remit to the next conference of the North Auckland Counties’ Association, suggesting “that a Chair of Veterinary Science be established in New Zealand.” Rest Room Facilities.
Mr W. Stewart, speaking on behalf of the special committee appointed at the previous meeting to go into the matter of improving the local restroom, stated that the committee was of the opinion that the Town Board should be approached. “We should request the board to place conspicuous signs at the corner of Clifford Street and Broadway indicating the whereabouts of the rooms,” he said.
He also suggested that the board should construct a footpath from the Bank of New South Wales corner to the rest room, or as an alternative, construct a sealed pedestrian crossing from the existing footpath in Clifford Street to the rest room and library. The chamber intends to approach the Town Board along the lines suggested. Electrical Precautions. Drawing attention to the novelty oi electricity in the district, Mr. Wright raised the question of educating the local children to its .uses and misuses. He suggested that the Power Board should conduct lectures at the school, and that the chamber do all it could do to educate the children accordingly. It was decided that the secretary (Mr. V. F. Cracknell) should write to the Bay of Islands Power Board, requesting them to give the matter consideration.
Loans.—A further list of interest-free loans and donations received by the Minister for Finance (Mr Nash), brings the total to £1,808,406. The latest loans include £IOOO from the New Zealand Educational Institute, for the duration of the war and six months after, and £SO from an anonymous resident of Auckland, for the duration of the war and six months.
