Gaoled For Disobeying Maintenance Order

Arrested in Auckland on a warrant issued in Whangarei, Henry Brady, a Public Works Department employee at Waiuku, appeared in the Whangarei Court this morning charged with disobedience of a maintenance order in respect of his children. After hearing the statements of'the maintenance officer (Mr P. J. Norwood), the magistrate (Mr R. Ferner) remarked that he had no sympathy for Brady, who was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment with Hard labour. The maintenance officer stated that to May 6 arrears amounted to £ll3 5/6. He had experienced considerable difficulty in inducing Brady to make payment. Despite warnings Brady would disappear and the police would then have to find him and arrest him. He had only been located and arrested in Auckland a couple of days previously. Had Made Offer. For Brady Mr L. Wright asked the magistrate to take into consideration the fact that Brady had made an offer. Brady said he would pay £1 a week oil the order which was for 30/- a week. He was quite willing to obey the order of the court. “You have been in permanent work for six months and you have made no payment; do you call that obeying the order of the court?” asked the magistrate. “I have no sympathy with you and you will be sentenced to a term of imprisonment. “You can make up your mind that when you come out you must support your family or go back to prison again. “You will be convicted and sentenced to four months’ imprisonment with hard labour.”
