Canteen Profits Solely For Benefit Of Soldiers

[Per Press Association Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister for Defence (Mr Jones) said yesterday that in connection with the operation of canteen profits in the naval, military and .air force camps throughout the Dominion, arrangements were proceeding satisfactorily. Special attention was being given to the provision of full facilities and the running of canteens on economical lines. The services given in the canteens had been gradually expanded and no effort would be spared in the arranging of. further improvements. The Minister emphasised that any profits derived from the canteens were being reserved exclusively for the benefit of the men themselves. No Absorption. There was no question of absorbing any part of this profit for any other purposes but directly in the interests of the men in the camps and their comrades abroad. Several distributions of profits had already been made, both within New Zealand and for units overseas, and further allocations would be approved from time to time. Should there be any undistributed profit at the end of the war it would be reserved and held for the benefit of naval, military and air force units. Enthusiastically Supported. The canteens had .been enthusiastically supported in the various camps and the men could continue this supnort with confidence in the knowledge that any surplus belonged to members of the New Zealand forces. Business transactions connected with the whole canteen organisation were subject to strict financial control and audit by the Government.
