Parakao Telephone Exchange Switches On
The function held in commemoration of the switching on of the telephone exchange at Parakao on Tuesday night was a great success. All Post and Telegraph men and their wives, including the postmaster of Whangarei (Mr Roberts) and Mrs Roberts, the engineer (Mr Gilchrist) and Mrs Gilchrist, the supervisor in engineer’s office (Mr Roberts) and Mrs, Roberts, supervisor of telegraphs (Mr Creelman), supervisor of works (Mr Boucher), and supervisor in exchange room (Miss Williams) were guests at the party and all spent a very enjoyable evening. New and old-time dances were danced. Mr J. Alison was M.C. A spot waltz was won by Mrs T. N. Blake and partner. After the supper interval, Mr F Platt welcomed the guests and wished them a pleasant evening. He paid a tribute to those installing the exchange for the way they were carrying out the work. Mr Platt then formally performed the Switching-on ceremony. Mr Roberts suitably replied. Mr Gilchrist also spoke in connection with the telephone service* and urged everyone to use long-distance tolls.
