Hydro-Electric Power Scheme To Start
[Special to "Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND, This Day. The Public Works Department will probably make a start on the work in connection with the hydro-electric power scheme in the Waikato River at Karapirc within the next four weeks. It is anticipated that at the height of operations the number of men employed will reach about 500. It will be necessary to build a road from the Cambridge-Rotorua highway to the scene of operations, but it is intended to‘ start on the. camp and the first stages of construction of the power scheme, before the improved access is provided. One of the main jobs will be to drive a tunnel through a hill to divert the flow of the river. The tunnel will extend for about a thousand feet and be about 25 feet in width’ The operations will be in the charge of Mr J. T. Gilkison, of the Public Works Department.
