Shipping Space For Apples

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND. This Day. Shipping space for the c-xport of apples to Great Britain is now available. It is reported that a large consignment of fruit has already been prepared for export, but there remains a need for prompt supplies of export lines.

The Other Extreme. Some months ago it was .announced that owing to the war only a few apples would be sent overseas. A campaign for increased local consumption was commenced, and as a result it has been possible to keep stocks moving since picking began, and it is considered that it will now be no easy task for the Marketing _ Department to secure sufficient fruit at short notice to make full use of the shipping space that has unexpectedly been allocated by the British Government. It is reported that in order to relieve the local market the Department is asking growers to hold in their orchards as much as possible of the fruit which they did not normally export, and which was composed of varieties and grades which did net suffer from delay in marketing.

Compensation For Growers,

Arrangements have been made for growers to be compensated for holding fruit to the extent of 4d a case for the first month .and 2d a case for each succeeding fortnight. As all the apples affected by this arrangement would consist of late varieties, the compensation would come into operation on May 1.
