Secret U.S. Army Manoeuvres
NEW YORK, April 24. On the grounds of secrecy in regard to new tactics, foreign military attaches have not been invited to witness the United States Army peace manoeuvres to be held in May. The Navy Department has called for tenders for materials to construct anti-submarine nets across United States’ harbours. The “New York Times” says it learns that the navy plans a giant experimental not across the entrance to San Francisco Harbour. The Secretary of the N,avy r (Mr Charles Edison) speaking at San Diego, California, after a visit to the naval base, said: “We cannot gamble with defeat. The eest of Impotence would be greater than tile frightful cost of arming., The desire of the United States for peace is equalled by its determination to defend its shores.” Mr Edison expressed his belief that predatory nations would think twice before risking a conflict with the United States, whose naval programme was serving notice against aggressor nations:' ' ; ’
