Solemn Dignity Of London’s Anzac Day

(Received noon.) LONDON, April 25. Anzac Day was observed in London with solemn dignity. There was no ceremony at the Cenotaph, but hundreds individually paid homage throughout the day. The New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) laid the first wreath and was followed by FieldMarshal Lord Birdwood, for the Indian Army, the Australian High Commissioner (Mr S. M. Bruce), for the Commonwealth Forces, General Sir lan Hamilton, for the British Empire Service League, General Sir Alexander Godley, for the New Zealand Army, Sir Walter Braithwaite, for the Army Council and British Army, Sir Beauvoir de Lisle, for the 29th Division, the French Military Attache (General Lelong),' and representatives of the Royal and Merchant Navies. Australian Leader’s Address. Later a service was held in St. Clement Danes, conducted by the Rev. P. Bickford. The Australian-born Salvation Army leader (General G. L. Carpenter) delivered an address. Mr Jordan and Mr Bruce read the lessons, while the New Zealand contralto, Miss Christina Young, gave a solo. The. congregation included the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Lord Milne, Sir lan Hamilton, Sir Alexander Godley, the members of the New Zealand Anti-Tank Corps arid Dominion members of the Royal Air Force. Sir Alexander Godley, in an Anzac Day message to the New Zealand troops, said: “I am supremely confident that the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force will worthily uphold the glorious record of the First.”
