Freyberg, Turkish Chief Exchange Messages

CAIRO, April 24. The Commander of the New Zealand troops (Major-General Freyberg) and the Turkish Chief of Staff (General Tchakmak) exchanged Anzac Day messages. Major-General Freyberg recalled the Gallipoli landing, and said: “There are still some in our ranks who participated in that landing. They and others remember the Turkish army’s strong and tenacious resistance. We learned much from their valour and hardness. “It was a hard campaign, but it was not marred by any episode of which either side is ashamed. “Our respect for the Turks has developed into warm friendship. “We are very pleased that you are now our allies as well as our friends.' 7 General Tchakmak replied: “Turks who fought at Gallipoli always enthusiastically recall their encounters with the New Zealanders, and still relate proudly wondrous episodes of the epic struggle, since which they have been united to their former formidable foes with strong ties of respect and appreciation.”
