Humane Society’s Certificate For Northland Soldier

The parents of Mr John Rupert Purchase today received, on behalf of their son, the certificate of the Royal Humane Society from the hands of the county chairman (Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay). Mr John Purchase is now serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt. On September 7, 1939, he rescued Cecil Wallace Megson from drowning in the Otafka River and it was for this action that the certificate was awarded. It > was a great pleasure to make the presentation, Mr Mac Kay said. He described Mr Purchase’s deed as a gallant act by a young man of the county who is now doing his duty to his country and his empire. Mr Purchase thanked Mr Mac Kay for the presentation and trusted that as his son had come successfully through the rescuing episode that he would also safely return from the war.
