Council has No Power To Grant Compensation
Compensation amounting to £l2 was asked by Mr G. Murphy, of Waikiekie, from the Whangarei County Council in consideration for the death of a milking cow which broke her leg in a hole in a bridge. His letter said that, owing to one of his milking cows putting a foot through a hole in the bridge, a leg was broken. During her struggle through the night she finished up in the creek. 1 “I might state that this animal was equal to her 3001 b of fat per year,” the letter said. “Therefore, I would like to ask for- compensation to the amount of £l2, which would he cost of replacement. I got Mr Stephen to inspect this accident. 1 have also paid my rates.” Mr A. Stephen explained that Mr Murphy had paddocks on both sides of the bridge. The hole through which the cow had put its foot was so small that an axe had to be used to extricate the animal. The county chairman (Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay) said that the council had no power to grant compensation.
