Maungatapere
The first meeting of the year was held in the local hall on February 15. Mrs Newton presided over a small attendance of members and friends. A very interesting but sad letter from our link in Cornwall was read. A most instructive talk on flowers and how to arrange them in vases, bowls, etc., was given by Mrs Feaver, who also demonstrated posy and bouquet making, which was keenly watched by all present. It was decided not to hold a birthday this year, but to run a dance and give the proceeds to the “Soldiers’ Comfort Club” on February 27, instead. Mrs Newton’s resignation as president was accepted with regret, all members joining in wishing her a very happy holiday, and looking forward to her return, so as to give a full account of her travels. Mrs Robinson’s musical competition caused great fun and was won by Mrs Newton. The serving of afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem and the New Zealand national anthem, brought a very happy meeting to a close.
Mr and Mrs Basil Pole, of Hawcra, are on holiday, and are the guests of Mrs Pole’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. H. Wilson, Portland.
