Northern Carriers Fined For Award Breaches
Two carriers were charged at the Kaikohe Court with alleged breaches of the award. The Inspector of Awards (Mr G. Adler) charged Ernest Lovell Bott, of Takehe, with employing a worker temporarily driving a motor vehicle, and failing to pay wages in accordance with the award. The work carried out "By the employee was principally that of an agricultural worker, but from time to time he had been required to drive a licensed lorry, said Mr Adler. Bott had failecTto pay the higher rate fc the time the employee had been engaged in driving. "Bott had paid considerable arrears, and the department was not pressing for a heavy penalty. The magistrate (Mr Ferner) imposed a penalty of £l. Weekly Wage Not Given Failure to pay a weekly rate of wages to an employee was charged against George Saunders Penney, carrier, of Kaikohe. Mr Adler said that the employee had been employed as a weekly worker, but later, on a casual basis. It was alleged that no notice of termination of services had been given and, as the worker had been employed continuously for more than four days, he was entitled to be paid full weekly rates. A penalty of £1 10/ was imposed, witnesses’ expenses of £1 14/ being allowed.
