P.W.D. Men's Recruiting

[Per Press Association. Copyright .] WESTPORT, This Day. The senior engineer, at Westport, of the Public Works Department (Mr A. G. Park), at a gathering to farewell seven of the department’s employees who leave on Wednesday, to join the Railway Survey and Construction Company, stated that in some quarters the statement of the Minister of Public Works (Mr Semple) that a fine response had been made by men of this department had been belittled. The response in this district alone, he said, showed the truth of the assertion. Of the total number of recruits for all the forces that left the Buller district for service overseas 40 per cent, had been Public Works employees. The actual numbers were 132 accepted for service, of whom 53 were department men.
