Vegetable Garden
1 February reminds us of autumn, and at. time of writing there is an autumn feeling in the air, that means the beginning of another planting season. Prepare for the winter. Keep the tomatoes, beans, marrows, etc., picked. Keep the plants tied to stakes, and spray where necessary. / Also plant for further supplies < wherever possible. « ISow cabbage, cauliflower, dwarf beans, lettuce, turnips, spinach, carrots, silver beet. Plant out celery and keep well watered during dry weather. Put out leeks for winter use.
Spray tomatoes, and keep lateral shoots removed. Keep runner beans closely gathered. Peas and beans that are finished should be dug in. They will' improve the nitrogen content of the soil. Earth up early planted celery and leeks. Sow oats or other soiling crop for digging in later. Keep adding to the compost heap. Lift onions as they mature, and dry before storing. Burn all diseased rubbish, and return the ashes to the garden.
