Pigs ... and ... People

"THE field day at Kiteroa Farm, A Maungatapere, was a huge success, and the District Council expresses its thanks to the Whangarei Jersey Club for the opportunity given to stage a combined cattld and pig demonstration. The Large White sow, loaned for the occasion by Mr H. E. Johnson, was an outstanding animal and gave great scope to the council’s supervisor. * * :'.l !» 'THE show season is now in full A swing and the council's supervisor is greatly in demand for judging pigs. It is regretted that the limited lime at his disposal and the clashing of show dates precludes the acceptance of all these requests, but where It does not interfere with the itinerary every effort is made to oblige the show committees. .? » «= * ’ A N interesting sidelight on provision A of pig feed by the farmer evolved from a discussion at a recent meeting of the Primary Production Council. This centred round the question of maize-growing in Northland and the recommendation of Mr E. A. Arnold that farmers should confine this to areas of one acre or so fs worthy ot careful consideration. * * * MR ARNOLD, who speaks from long experience, advises that an area of one acre, well done, will, with meal, keep some fifteen pigs going in the winter months, and that this area for a dairy farm of 60 cows can be handled by the dairy farmer.

r pHE result of the experiments on A pig feeding conducted at the Northern Wairoa Experimental Farm should be followed with care, as these are conducted under Northland conditions. . The council has accepted an offer to have these explained in detail at its next meeting, and it is hoped to be able to give notes of value regarding these in these jottings. V * » 3 rjTHE supply of bacon to Britain, where consumers are now rationed, is still ef paramount importance, and that the Young Farmers’ Clubs have included the judging of bacon pigs in their competitions for this year is n matter for praise and satisfaction. * * * * T\R„ C. P. McMEEKAN, now of Canterbury Agricultural College, needs no introduction to Northland farmers, as his work is widely known. The council has appointed a special sub-> committee whose object is to see if arrangements can be made for a lecture tour of Northland by Dr. McMeekan in the coming winter months. id ❖ * * TDEAS for the improvement of pig husbandry are urgently required. Many farmers are using successfully some home-made appliances or labour savers among their pigs. Why not give this benefit to other pig men? A line to the council’s office is all that is required.—Thank you.
