£50,000,000 Cost Of Living Subsidy
LONDON, February 8. In a statement in the House of Commons, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon) said the Government was subsidising- the cost of living to the extent of £50,000,000 a year. This had prevented a rise of 12 points in the food index. Subsidies included over £12,000,000 to keep the price of milk from rising by a Id a quart. Wheat subsidies cost £480,000 a week, meat £320,000, and bacon £BO,OOO.
