Demanded Payment Guarantee Before Aiding Wrecked Ship
(Received 3 p.m.) MANILA, February 9. The captain of the Philippines liner President Quezon, which went aground on an island and sank in a storm off Japan on Januar3 r 26, told a court of inquiry that the captain of the Japanese liner Uki'shima Maru refused to lend aid unless he signed a guarantee of payment. He added that he was forced to leave the sinking ship to sign papers assuring the rescue of the passengers and crew, many of whom were aboard when he left the ship. The Ukishima Maru’s master refused to lower his lifeboat until the papers had been signed, and refused to send radio messages unless he was paid for them in cash.
