Massed attacks ordered by General Hindenburg against the Russians, it was reported, resulted in appalling carnage. The Germans fell in thousands. The coastline of Asia Minor facing the Aegean Islands of Chios and Mitylene was being hurriedly fortified by the Turks. On the introduction of the Budget in the Prussian Diet, several Socialist members created a commotion by emphatically dissenting from the Government’s wa rpolicy and declaring that the people of Germany demanded the termination of the war. Food scarcity was so acute in Berlin that the bread-ticket system was likely to be commenced immediately. During three days' fighting in North France, the Germans lost 4000 killed and 16,000 wounded as the result of engagements which could not affect the main operations. Maritz, one of the South African rebels, ivas stated to have been executed by the Germans for treacherous conduct in the . Kakamas campaign.
