The sympathy of the Whangarei Borough Council in his illness, and hopes ioi his early recovery, have been conveyed to Councillor N. James. Inc Tovvn Clerk (Mr L. O. Hall) was granted leave to attend the conference of the Institute of Town Clerks on March 5. Mr Arthur T. Smith has been appointed by the Whangarei Borough Council as honorary caretaker of Mair I ark and the public property adjacent to the area belonging to the council. Miss G. Scott-Baker, Whangarei librarian, has been authorised by the Whangarei Borough Council to attend the conference ol’ the New Zealand Libraries’ Association at Wellington from February 21 to 24. Mr I. A. Crombie, borough engineer, was last night granted permission by the council to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute cl Engineers, commencing at Wellington on February 20. A message from New York says there arrived at New York today, Commissioner J. Evan Smith, who is on his way to New Zealand to direct the Salvation Army’s work there. He is accompanied by his wife and son. The death occurred on Wednesday, at Birkenhead, of Mrs Jane Newcombe Rutherford, at the age of 90 years. Mrs Rutherford came to New Zealand with her husband and family in the sailing ship Florida 55 years ago, landing at Wellington. Condolence with the relatives of the late Mr R. S. Allan was expressed by the Whangarei County Council at the monthly meeting today, members standing as a mark of respect. During his term of office as member of the council for the Mangakalua riding Mr Allan had served the ratepayers well and he had been held in high esteem by councillors and settlers, said the chairman (Mr J. A. S. Mao Kay).
