The council would receive 20 per cent, of the gross takings. A similar scheme, introduced by golf professionals in Napier, the letter stated, had been enlarged and, during the holiday fortnight, the municipality received £SO in rent. ‘•lt is generally agreed that Whangarei is lacking in entertainment of this kind, especially on a summer evening when-people prefer to be out of doors, ’ the letter concluded. Moving that the application be declined, Cr. D. J. Thomson said that the drainage scheme provided for a cut through Central Park and irrespective of that the Parks Committee had too many Opposition to any public parks being used for such a purpose was expressed by Ci. D. L. Smedley. The Mayor indicated that, whereas if suitable ground was available elsewhere he would raise no objection Central Park, used freely by the public all the year round, should not be commercialised. The motion was carried.
