Acute Sack Shortage

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l

’WELLINGTON, This Day. Because no new sacks are now being imported into New Zealand a shortage has occurred in many parts of the country, particularly in districts where harvesting is in full swing. It was stated in Wellington that the Calcutta market was unable to supply sacks in -view of war require ments, and that an embargo had been placed on the importation of secondhand bags from Australia. At present there is an acute shortage of second-hand sacks in Wellington, but the demand is greater than hitherto and values have increased.

.Six months ago a Wellington firm was selling second-hand sacks for 6/- a dozen, but the price has since increased to 10/6 for the same quantity.

Though there was a shortage in Wellington, a merchant said the position was not as bad as in other districts such as Canterbury, Southland. Gisborne and Auckland.
