814 Maoris For Palmerston North Camp
[Special to “Northern Advocate’ M AUCKLAND, This Day. The main body of the Maori Battalion passed through Auckland last night on its way to camp at Palmerston North. The total number of all ranks was 432. The largest group of 203 men came from Northland. - In the early morning they assembled at Kaitaia, Kaikohe, Whangarei, and Dargaville, and other centres, and travelled by service cars and motor buses to the most suitable stations in order to catch the express to Auckland. Delayed by a minor derailment at Swanson, the express did not reach Auckland until 6.48, over one and aquarter houi’s late.
Quick Change-Over
A special train had been kept waiting, and, in order to adhere to schedule, a quick transfer of the men was necessary.
At 7.10 p.m., 22 minutes after they had arrived, they were again on their journey, having been joined by a small batch of recruits from the Auckland area.
With the personnel of- the two advanced parties, comprising actual and prospective officers and non-com-missioned officers numbering 176, who have been in camp for some days, the total of officers and other ranks at the camp will be 814.
