Britain Recognises Only Chiang Govt.
In the House of Commons today the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) was questioned about the proposed setting up of a Chinese Government, headed by Wang Ching-wei, under Japanese protection.
In reply he said: “Japan issued a statement on January 9 to the effect that the movement for the establishment of a new central government in China had gathered strength. “A careful study of this statement revealed that what was in the mind of Wang Ching-wei was in keeping with the declared intentions of Japan, and the Japanese Empire would accordingly direct all possible efforts to the formation of the new government.
“The only Government in China recognised by Britain and with which Britain is in diplomatic relations is the National Government of China, in which Marshal Chiang Kai-shek is chairman of the Supreme Defence Council and President of the Executive Council.”
