Scow Storm Tossed
[Special to “Northern Advocate’’} WHANGAROA, This Day.
Captain W. Sayer and the crew of the scow Success struck the full force of the heavy blow when crossing the Parengarenga Bar at 1 p.m. yesterday. Everything on deck was washed overboard, including a large tarpaulin, a four gallon drum of kerosene and a 44 gallon drum of motor spirit. A meat safe, bolted to the deck, also disappeared overboard. A hole was stove in the bow of the vessel, but above the waterline. Captain Sayer’s hands were cut while fighting to hold the steering wheel. Scalp Injury, A member of the crew suffered a scalp injury, and received medical attention at Whangaroa Hospital. The Success is now sheltering, at Whangaroa with several smaller craft. She will return to Auckland when conditions are calmer.
Several small dinghies were sunk in the harbour on Saturday night, but all of the bigger craft rode the storm safely. One large launch dragged about 50 yards, but no damage was done.
Ships Held Up
En route from Westport to Auckland, the Kaimai put into Wellington yesterday morning through stress of weather.
She suffered no damage and leaves again this afternoon. The Dutch liner Roggeveen, originally due today, was delayed a day. The Waipiata arrived this morning and reported that conditions in the Bay of Plenty were bad. The Port Waikato, which left Auckland some hours ahead of the Waipiata, has not yet arrived. It is presumed that she is sheltering somewhere on the coast.
