Northern Volunteers Shy Of Examination
Northland recruits seemingly are still feeling diffident about presenting themselves for medical examination. Of the 40 men called for medical examination for the Second Echelon of the Special Military Force, only 24 presented themselves before the examiners in Whangarei yesterday afternoon. * * Of this number, 21 were passed as fit, one was classed as temporarily unfit and two were rejected as permanently unfit. Four Maoris were also examined, three being classed as fit and one as temporarily unfit.
At Kaikohe 12 men were called for examination but only half that number attended, four being registered fit and two permanently unfit.
The delay in the receipt of notification cards by recruits in isolated district has been believed to have been responsible for many not attending for examination on the scheduled dates but it is known that this position cannot be held accountable for the failure of many others to present themselves.
This week the examining board has visited, the principal centres in Northland to conduct the examinations and has found that more than one-third of the men scheduled to appear have not done so.
