YACHTING -By “Bowsprit”
Although Saturday’s weather conditions were not the best, this was not the cause of only three yachts going down the harbour. Most of the boats were hauled out at the rowing club’s sheds preparing for their Christmas cruises.
Among these were the Wairangi, Melita, Waialae, Sceptre, MacushTa and the Charm.
The Melita is going through to Auckland, while the Katiro, Waima, Fay, Wairangi and Waialae are going North to the Bay of Islands. The three yachts that went away for the week-end were the Ben Bolt, Sea Ace and Waima, all of which were reported to have had a good time.
afternoon the boys off the. Melita and Waialae tried their hand at sailing in the seven-footers, but these boats proved to be too tricky for most of them. Dave Wylie seemed to be trying very hard to capsize hrs yacnt. the Raven,
and eventually succeeded, although within half an hour he was back sailing.
The Scud and Sunola arrived back In the Basin early on Sunday morning. Both these beats have been down the harbour ail through the week owing to adverse weather conditions. Among the launches seen down the harbour were the Velincia and Jeunese. Most of the others arc also preparing for their Christmas cruise.
Mr Waldron's new launch is now nearing completion, and will be off the slip early in the New Year. It has taken over three months to build. During this time interest has arisen and everybody is keen to see her out of the shed.
Enlistments.—Only seven men. have enlisted in the Hamilton group for the second echelon of the Special Military Force during' the last week.
