Public's Interest In Northland Sweet Pea Show

Great interest was shown by the public in the sweet pea show staged by Northland school children in the Whangarei Town Hall yesterday. Throughout the day and evening there was a continuous stream into the hall. Adults and children from ail over the district attended.

One bus load of children came from Wellsford, while others were present from as far south as Helensviiie.

More than 500 adults paid for admission. Children were admitted free. Keen interest was taken in the school courts, the designs and displays of which drew enthusiastic comment, the adults finding it difficult to realise that the whole of the work had been carried out by the children without assistance. Whangarei Best Court The school courts were judged by the public, Whangarei, with 447 votes being placed first; Maunu, 351 votes, second and I-lora Hora, k. 85 votes third The children were keenly interested in trying their skill in identifying the 50 varieties of native trees for which they had been preparing throughout the year. The trees were fine healthy specimens and were loaned by Mr F. Holman, of Whangarei, who also loaned trees for the decorations.

An excellent display of gladioli was made by Mr C. Chapman, of Ruakaka, in support of the children’s exhibits. Many of the exhibits were sent to the hospital this morning. Committee and Helpers The show was organised and conducted bj' the ladies’ committee of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club, with Mrs J. A. Inkster as chairman and Hrs W. W. Logan as secretary. The following acted as judges and stewards;

Mesdames Proctor, Simons, Timewell, Haden, Carruth, Franks, Halliday, Clark, H. Smith, Taylor and Finch; Misses Drummond, FI. Smith, A. Foote, Lupton. Stuart, Milne and Webber. Mr Stringer also acted as a member of the committee, and assistance was rendered by the following High School girls: B. Weston, R. Bastard, O. Englund, E. Fry, S. Soich and A. McKenzie.

Bottles for the display of exhibits were loaned by Sothern and Co. Ltd.
